Lava sand heats up nicely. But is much heavier than cows corn or rice.
I have not tried it cold yet.

I read tons of reviews mentioning this product was expensive but well worth it for heating pads. I also read people saying one bag doesn’t go very far so I bought 2. No matter how long I put them in the microwave for they WILL NOT GET HOT. I’m extremely upset to have wasted the money and DO NOT recommend this product to anyone. I am very disappointed.

Very disappointed. I read tons of reviews on best material to use for handmade hot pads and many people recommended this and said 1 bag doesn’t go far so I picked up 2… No matter how long I put in the microwave this material won’t get hot at all and when after TEN MINUTES of heating they got a little warm it lasted about 2 minutes before being back to room temp. Complete waste of my money and wasn’t cheap. Very upsetting do NOT recommend at all.

I initially purchased the Lava Rock Sand as an alternative to rice in warming pads. I put the lava sand inside new white socks but it kind of leaked through three layers of 100% cotton socks. I didn't allow for enough movement for the sand, and I would recommend others utilize the entire length of sock when sewing closed the innermost sock.
I then purchased the Lavayoo Heating and Cooling Pad, along with covers. (I inadvertently purchased the wrong size covers, and Lavayoo offered a return of them. Thanks so much). I would highly recommend the Heating and Cooling pads!
I made two covers--one from canvas and the other from denim. I added velcro to the inside of each of my covers. I have had rice socks for many years, but I really like the lava rock sand much better.
No smell. They are washable. They stay hot/warm for several hours!
Thank you!

I BOUGHT THE BAGS OF LAVASAND TO CUSTOM MAKE MY OWN SHAPE AND SIZE. UNFORTUNATELY THE MATERIAL I PURCHASED WAS TOO POROUS AND THE FINER GRITS OF SAND WERE SIFTING THROUGH THE MATERIAL. BEFORE I BUY NEW MATERIAL, CAN SOMEONE PROVIDE SOME GUIDANCE ON THE PROPER MATERIAL?

I want to thank Steve and his crew for quickly getting me my products. I had several orders with Lavayoo and have been extremely happy with the delivery time frame and customer service. I made shoulder and neck heating pads. I would send a picture, but I have already wrapped and sent them off.
Thank you again and have a very Merry Christmas,
Therese

After trying rice, feed corn, and flax seeds for my microwave hand warmers (all started smelling funky after a few uses) I finally tried the black sand. It is amazing. Keeps the heat well, and since it isn't organic, no more odors!

Wanting to make my son a neck cooler, eye pack, and back warmer/cooler. I have used other materials, with disappointment. This sand seems perfect. Want to make a few little hot pads for coffee cups, plus include a separated layer of lavender buds. Gardening and staying cool are stealing my sewing hours! I will send pics when completed. Gonna love this product for sure

Website is super friendly. My order was processed and arrived quickly. The shipping box arrived with a puncture in it, and one bag was affected by this. We are at the mercy of shipping and handling companies :(
I will definitely purchase from LavaHQ again - love the product.
